money

money mismanagement vs. scarcity

The big problem with debt is that it tends to keep us in an infantile state about money decisions, a paradigm that is very hard to overcome. Most of us, from our earliest interactions with money, have relied on the generous teat of some student loan, credit card, consumer loan, or even parental loan to justify our every whim and need. Pretty soon we lose the orientation of where money is coming from - we lose sight of the cause and effect reality of money:

  1. you earn it and it's there
  2. you spend it and it's gone

Communication with Creditors: Set an Arrangement that is Right for You

If you find yourself treading water when it comes to a debt, whether a student loan or any other type, one of the best things you can do for yourself is to take action before the problem worsens. A key part of this is to keep everyone involved informed before your first payment becomes overdue.

Communicate with your creditors. If you find yourself in trouble, do your best to let your lender know as soon as possible. If you keep in touch, they will feel more comfortable- they can verify your address, your phone number, update their records. They may feel less inclined to turn your account over to a collections department if they feel you are cooperating and aren't trying to duck out of your debt.

My Story, Part One

I have over $65,000 in student loan debt. It didn't start out at that amount, but built gradually over the years. I don't think about it daily, but I never forget it is there.

Throughout my time in public school, I was aimed toward college. I worked as hard as possible to achieve, to add extra curricular activities to my list, to prepare myself in every way I could to head to college. In my senior year, just before graduation, my mother came to me and told me there was no money to send me to college. I was angry. I felt cheated. I always knew we were poor, but there had never been a conversation about this, not during any of the time prior, not during all that work I was putting toward success. I insisted I was going to school, I didn't care how, but I would find a way.
